Quarantasei. Quarantasei guerre, in trentatré paesi, in tutti i continenti abitati.

Ogni conflitto in poche righe: dove, chi combatte chi, quanti morti. Non c'è giudizio. I numeri bastano.

I numeri, tutti insieme

Quarantasei conflitti. Trentatré paesi. Oltre duecentoquarantamila morti diretti nell'ultimo anno.

E in ogni caso — agganaway.

Forty-six. That is the number of active armed conflicts in the world as you read these lines. Forty-six wars, in thirty-three countries, on every inhabited continent. It is the highest number since World War II. In the past year, by the most conservative estimates, they have produced over two hundred and forty thousand direct deaths. Of these forty-six conflicts, the evening news covers three. Perhaps four. The rest does not exist.

What follows is a list. Not an analysis, not a commentary: a list. Each conflict in a few lines: where, who is fighting whom, how many dead. There is no judgement. The numbers are enough.

The numbers, all together

Forty-six conflicts. Thirty-three countries. Over two hundred and forty thousand direct deaths in the past year. Tens of millions displaced.

Of these forty-six, television regularly covers three: Ukraine, Gaza, Iran. Sudan — which has more deaths than any of them — appears on screen less often than the weather forecast.

It is no one's fault in particular. It is how information works: what is nearby, what involves the great powers, what has images makes the news. The rest is silence. But silence does not mean peace. It only means no one is watching.

The fact that a war doesn't make the news doesn't make it less real. It only makes it more alone.

This list is not meant to make anyone feel guilty. It is meant to put a number on a feeling many people share: that the world is heading in a worrying direction, and that most of what happens remains outside our awareness. Forty-six is a number worth keeping in mind. Not to despair. To know.

Knowing is the first step. It's not much. But it is not nothing.

In any case — agganaway.
